Lightning Talk Description: Interprofessional researchers are working steadily to advance evidence linking the impact of interprofessional education (IPE) on collaborative, person-centered, clinical practice and the ways practice needs shape health professions education requirements. Studies with single university alumni find that graduates who participated in campus-based IPE recognize that their collaborative academic experiences shaped what they looked for, expected, and practiced in their workplaces (Shrader, et al, 2022; Crampsey, et al, 2023). These observations have been further reinforced by studies with workforce stakeholders who agree that graduates who participated in IPE while in their professional programs have a positive impact on interprofessional collaborative practice and workplace culture (Shrader et al, 2022).

Employers are critical drivers of interprofessional collaborative practice and their buy-in is essential if interprofessional collaborative practice is to be significantly deployed in healthcare of the future (Dow et al, 2013). In order to improve fidelity between the education of future healthcare workers and the needs of healthcare employers, we must better understand common competencies, content, and skills desired by employers across locales and to differentiate these from those that are specific to clinical settings, cultures, and geography. This understanding will help clarify and define what core content should be included in all health professions curricula across institutions to enhance interprofessional collaborative practice.

This oral presentation describes the innovative research process of a cross-institutional interprofessional team focused on developing a multi-level, mixed methods study to explore the impacts of IPE on diverse workplace practices and understand the needs of healthcare employers including recruitment/retention, collaboration, and culture. The team will describe how they came together, the commonalities and differences in their perspectives and single region studies; the process of selecting theories and methodologies; the implications of language; the logistics of working across institutions; and their next steps in conducting the research process. This presentation will provide attendees with practical knowledge on developing multi-institution scholarly projects to bridge the gaps between healthcare curricula and the reality of the clinical workplace. The presentation will conclude with a call to action for attendees to consider opportunities to develop multi-institutional collaborations to study the bidirectional needs of IPE and collaborative practice to impact the Quintuple Aim.
