Lightning Talk Description: As an up-to-date to the WHO (2010) global IPE environmental scan, this abstract will report on the findings of the 2022 Global IPE Situational Analysis conducted by the InterprofessionalResearch.Global (IPR.Global).
The survey included 17 quantitative questions that were analyzed at the global and regional levels. Three open-text questions were thematically analyzed. In total, 152 institutions from six regions worldwide contributed to this study.
The results demonstrate a global expansion in IPE development and integration beyond the Western countries. At the same time, the presence of established IPE programs with centralized structure, staff, and funding are still lacking across the globe, specifically in Africa and South America and Mexico. Only 38% of the institutions require all students to participate in IPE. The involvement of patients/family in IPE program development is also limited to just over one-third of respondents.
About half of respondents reported providing interprofessional faculty development to their faculty and facilitators. Many institutions indicated that they assess their students’ achievements towards IPE outcomes, with over half also reported using one or more interprofessional competency frameworks in their IPE programs. The extent to which the academic institutions are involved in interprofessional research is quite limited with almost half indicated that their institutions were rarely or not involved in IPE-related scholarly work.
The open-text analysis revealed that supportive senior leadership, a culture of collaboration, and the recognition of IPE as a strategic direction and/or priority at an institutional level could foster the successful implementation of IPE. Inadequate administrative support, lack of funding, tribalism and hegemony, little motivation, poor attitudes regarding IPE, data management difficulties, and limited dedicated time for research seemed to impair successful implementation of scholarly activities in the field.
