Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Conducting Thorough Literature Searches to Advance Your IPE Research
Seminar Description: To generate new knowledge in interprofessional practice and education (IPE), it is essential that researchers understand the body of existing work. This understanding of what is already known allows researchers to develop questions that are meaningful and have the capacity to create new knowledge. If we are to build the case for IPE through information, evidence, and outcomes, researchers need to be well informed of the current evidence so they may build upon it. Unfortunately, IPE journal editors often see submissions that lack a thorough background section and research questions that are not novel enough to generate meaningful new insights. The purpose of this seminar is to prepare participants to produce higher quality IPE research and publications through skill-building activities.
After attending this session, the participants will be able to: (1) Identify useful databases and other sources for IPE literature, (2) Create a search strategy relevant to a given IPE research question, (3) Conduct a literature search for an IPE question, and (4) Develop a plan for organizing and assessing articles.
Presenters include representatives of the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative Scholarship Committee, which includes journal editors, prolific writers, experienced reviewers and researchers; joined by a health sciences librarian. The team will demonstrate skills and walk participants through active learning exercises. Participants will draft search strategies and get feedback from presenters and other attendees through a collaborative online tool. Participants will leave with the skills to conduct and document a thorough literature search that will help them generate meaningful research questions that will add to the IPE body of knowledge.
