Lightning Talk Description:
Description:
This Lightning Talk will describe an innovative interprofessional educational session with second year dental students and third year occupational therapy doctorate students. Students collaborated in a variety of activities to develop strategies to positively enhance the dental visit experience for individuals across the lifespan with sensory sensitivities or chronic pain.
Summit theme:
This collaborative interprofessional session allowed students to learn about the challenges faced by special patient populations in accessing oral health care, and provided interactive opportunities to work together to develop strategies to positively enhance the dental visit experience for individuals across the lifespan with sensory sensitivities or chronic pain. Through innovative instructional design, simulated medical records, multimedia content, and virtual collaboration, students learned about the roles and responsibilities involved in the fields of dentistry and occupational therapy and recognized the benefits of collaboration and communication in enhancing the health outcomes of special patient populations.
Provide Knowledge:
The Lightning Talk will describe the rationale, planning, and implementation of an Occupational Therapy and Dental interprofessional education session at the University of Florida, and will empower learners to create similar experiences at their academic institutions with the goal of preparing health professional students for future collaborative practice.
Priority Criteria:
*Meaningful engagement and inclusion of patient, individual, family, community, and/or caregiver perspective: Video footage.
*Inclusion of one or more students/learners on the author or presenter team: Two Curriculum and Instruction EdD students.
*Measurable learning and/or health outcomes: IPE Artifact assignment and Post-session evaluation
*Measurable impact of interprofessional teams on health equity: Post-session evaluation
*Identification and addressing of factors beyond clinical care (e.g. social determinants) that affect the health of individuals, communities, and populations: Lecture content; Video footage of lived patient experiences and professional experiences
*Design to impact Quadruple Aim¹ outcomes (enhancing patient experience, improving population health, increasing value, and improving the wellness of the health care team): IPE session content, videos, collaborative large group and small group discussions, and artifact creation focused the students on mitigating barriers/removing barriers to care.
