Lightning Talk Description: This Lightning Talk describes the inaugural year of an interprofessional education (IPE) workforce development program organized by the Center for Interprofessional Health at the University of Minnesota. This program created a symbiotic relationship between the University’s IPE Center and preceptors in academic and community clinical learning environments. This work is an example of theme 2: Practice-Education Partnerships Advancing Care with People and Communities. Not only does this activity create partnerships across education and clinical practice, it also strengthens connections between academic and community preceptors. The World Health Organization identified interprofessional education as a critical strategy to address healthcare provider shortages (WHO, 2010).
This Lightning Talk describes a novel program to enhance preceptors’ interprofessional education activities. The Affiliate Faculty Program’s inaugural cohort included participants from nine different professional disciplines. Affiliates gathered for monthly meetings to learn with, from and about one another. Additionally, they learned about and engaged with IPE activities facilitated by the Center for Interprofessional Health. Several faculty contributed to IPE-related research projects. This Lightning Talk will review participant demographic data, program evaluation, and lessons learned.
The Affiliate Faculty Program is preparing for its second year with adaptations in response to participant feedback. CIH is now launching an advanced Senior Affiliate Faculty Program for those looking to enhance their leadership involvement with IPE endeavors. The curriculum is interprofessional at its core as its authors are from three different professional backgrounds (operations, physical therapy, psychology). After attending this Lightning Talk, audience members will leave with creative ideas to effectively engage with academic and community preceptors dedicated to expanding the impact of interprofessional education.
