Lightning Talk Description: In collaboration with the Duke University School of Nursing Student Success Center, the Duke Health Interprofessional Education and Care Center, and North Carolina Central University (NCCU), we implemented a positive psychology-informed Stress First Aid (SFA) training program for health professions students, faculty and staff at Duke and NCCU. This program aims to address stress and burnout present throughout the healthcare workforce.

SFA is a pre-clinical, peer-to-peer support training tool that teaches participants to assess and respond to suspected psychological injuries in colleagues, classmates, and themselves with the goals of preserving life, preventing further harm, and promoting recovery. SFA is an indicated mental illness prevention measure published by the National Center for PTSD (Watson, et al., 2011; Westphal, 2020)

Over the last year, our team has facilitated SFA training for 451 faculty, staff, and students at Duke and NCCU. In addition to the training, the SFA Implementation team recruited faculty, students, and staff as champions to provide recommendations on improving the training. During the first year of dissemination and through our champions, we learned that participants wanted additional practice applying SFA principles and more options for virtual participation for distance-based learners. In response, we created virtual, application based Booster sessions for small groups and interprofessional learning. These sessions provide practice opportunities, and we are in the process of creating shorter, asynchronous training options to meet the needs of distance-based students.

In our presentation, we will discuss how we implemented SFA training for a broad range of health professionals and students and the strategies we are currently using to increase engagement and enhance effectiveness of our training program.
