Lightning Talk Description: Educators in the health sciences are challenged to prepare students for safe practice in complex
health care environments. The Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice
(CCICP) identify the need for health professions students to not only learn their own professional
competencies but also competencies to prepare for interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) as
they transition to professionals.

As healthcare models adapt to incorporate collaborative care models, institutions of higher learning must effectively train, assess and provide feedback to students as they collaborate with one another. There is a paucity of validated and reliable instruments to objectively assess student team performance based on the IPEC core competencies.

The development of the Creighton Interprofessional Collaboration Evaluation (C-ICE) instrument was modeled around the core competencies of interprofessional education and practice.

The C-ICE was found to be both a reliable and valid instrument to measure interprofessional interactions of student teams. This instrument fills a gap that previously lacked measurement of student behavioral change reflected in the IPEC competencies. The data indicated the instrument is easy to understand, comprehensive, useful, and applicable in a variety of educational settings. The C-ICE provides a pivotal avenue for continued interprofessional education and research.

Since implementation, the C-ICE has been used locally, nationally, and internationally to evaluate student teams in a variety of healthcare professions.

This Lightning Talk presentation will discuss the C-ICE instrument, how to utilize the C-ICE when evaluating student teams, and outcomes of the C-ICE. The Lightning Talk will discuss how to prepare healthcare professional students for interprofessional education and how to utilize the C-ICE in the curriculum, with a variety of educational activity examples provided. In alignment with the conference theme, Working Together for Impact, this presentation will prepare educators with a reliable and valid instrument to evaluate interprofessional student team interactions.
