Lightning Talk Description: The Health Professions Accreditation Collaborative (HPAC) published guidance on the development of interprofessional education (IPE) for health professions in 2019. Since that time, many health professions schools have developed and implemented IPE programs using the HPAC framework, inclusive of a rationale, goals, deliberate design, and assessment and evaluation. Program evaluation is built around IPE learning activities and associated targeted interprofessional competencies but must also account for the reality of IPE activities being modified or eliminated, or new activities developed, over time. Just as IPE programs evolve over time, so too must a program’s evaluation plan through informed continuous quality improvement (QI) methodology.
This presentation describes the QI process used by one health professional school to assess effectiveness of its IPE programmatic evaluation plan in measuring student growth in interprofessional attitudes, values, behaviors, and skills. Presenters will offer context by providing a brief overview of interprofessional activities incorporated longitudinally within a four-year Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum, and the programmatic evaluation plan, including the sequencing and alignment of measurement tools (SPICE-R2 and IPEC-3). A description of the QI process and engaged stakeholders, (inclusive of faculty, staff, IPE partners, and students), will be provided. Interpretation of findings from three cohorts of students within the contexts of student self-reported growth in interprofessional attitudes, values, behaviors, and skills, and the suitability of chosen measurement tools will be discussed with proposed changes to the evaluation plan. The session goal is to provide attendees with knowledge of the value and importance of applying the QI process to programmatic evaluation and share with attendees concrete approaches for interpreting program outcome data to inform revisions.
This lightning talk addresses the Summit theme “Building the IPE Case Through Information, Evidence, and Outcomes” by demonstrating evidence-based continuous QI methodology within an IPE program using program-specific outcomes data. Description of the QI process used will aid programs in ensuring appropriate measurement tools (i.e. surveys, knowledge assessments, reflections) are selected and administered at the most opportune time within a curriculum, with the goal of demonstrating IPE program impact on student growth in interprofessional attitudes, values, behaviors, and skills over time. Additionally, this talk fulfills the priority criteria “Measurable learning and/or health outcomes” by providing an example of outcomes data derived from evaluation of an IPE Program where data are presented at multiple timepoints along a student’s longitudinal completion of a health professional program.
In support of improving patient care, this activity is planned and implemented by The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Office of Interprofessional Continuing Professional Development (National Center OICPD). The National Center OICPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
