Lightning Talk Description: Socioeconomic factors and systemic barriers to health care plague marginalized and minoritized populations, leading to stark health inequities, particularly in large urban cities such as Philadelphia. Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) guidelines call for health disparities to be included in residency education; however, despite this requirement, curricular implementation is inconsistent, and the impact on residents' knowledge, skills, and behaviors is unclear. It is not uncommon for programs to report difficulty implementing health disparities curricula due to a lack of sufficient resources to implement and sustain them, despite recognition of its importance. There is little uniformity in the health disparities curriculum across Graduate Medical Education (GME). This lighting talk will discuss the findings from qualitative interviews with residency faculty and focus groups with resident trainees across multiple specialties to understand the current state of existing health equity curricula. The sessions identified barriers and facilitators to health equity curricular implementation and assessed the desire and feasibility of a centralized health equity curriculum. NVivo software was used to analyze transcripts and synthesize emergent themes.

This project highlights the theme of Interprofessional Collaboration to Address Health Equity, Racism, and Bias in Interprofessional Practice by emphasizing expanding health equity curriculum across specialties as well as enhancing skills for collaboration across teams with an overarching goal of improving health outcomes. Our qualitative analysis will inform the design of a health equity curricular framework that can be used across GME at our institution to support clinician awareness of social determinants of health, resource concerns, and how racism along with implicit and explicit bias in medicine contributes to a public health crisis. The outcomes and lessons learned from this pilot project can be leveraged to support the development of health equity educational frameworks tailorable to the specialty and community setting of residency training programs across the nation.

Fostering a healthcare workforce that collaboratively and effectively addresses the current and emerging needs of vulnerable and underserved communities will contribute to eliminating healthcare inequities, improving healthcare outcomes, and enhancing the wellness of the healthcare team.
