Tommy Lau is a fourth-year dental student at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in his hometown, Ann Arbor. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biomolecular Science also from the University of Michigan and was named the commencement speaker for the chemistry department in 2020. During his time at the School of Dentistry, Tommy exemplifies his leadership by serving as the chairperson for various organizations. Notably, he was elected as the District Trustee for the American Student Dental Association during 2021-2022, representing dental students from schools in the Midwest at the national level. He has also been serving as the Student Advisory Co-Chair for the University of Michigan Center for Interprofessional Education since 2021, bringing students together to amplify their voices to improve and bridge collaborations among different professions. In the future, Tommy is interested in staying involved in academia and hopes to pursue a career in orthodontics.

Centers for IPE have had success in co-developing IPE curricula with student leaders, leading to more meaningful and relevant IPE for health professional students. IPE leaders have also bemoaned the “hidden curriculum” of experiential settings, often undoing the IPE advancements made in the didactic setting. While there is a new opportunity for IPE faculty and centers to transform interprofessional practice and experiential education, we have not discussed how to leverage our students as partners and co-developers in leading this change.
