Lightning Talk Description: The Ohio State University School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (HRS) has designed an interprofessional welcome day for all incoming health sciences students for the previous 6 years. This event sets the stage that interprofessional practice is a key foundational and professional responsibility for all health professionals. This "We ARE HRS Welcome Day" event serves as the introduction for coordinated HRS interprofessional experiences as well as the university-wide BUCKIPE curriculum for students in our seven health science colleges. The BUCKIPE curriculum is an an evidence-based interprofessional curriculum that longitudinally spans 2-3 years.
“We are HRS” strives to facilitate the initial step toward building the health care team. The curricular components of this event begin with an introduction to our longitudinal case that is imbedded within each professional curriculum. Our colleagues from the academic medical center demonstrate the impact of the health care team for patient outcomes. The “We are HRS” program transitions into the concept of self-care reinforced by our imbedded mental health counselors. HRS CARES (Compassion, Attitude, Rest, Embrace, and Self-Kindness) is introduced by the final event of the day where students receive and transplant a plant to remind them to plant the "seed" and nurture their growth as an HRS team member. This innovative event engages students to “grow together” and initiates the student to consider their dual-identity as both a developing profession-specific clinician and as an interprofessional team member. This presentation will describe both qualitative and quantitative outcomes related to student reflections and impressions of the welcome day event as well as their transition into interprofessional practice while in the clinic.
