Lightning Talk Description: Training in interprofessional collaboration and leadership skills in health professions education has been inconsistent, thus leading to poor collaboration and communication in clinical settings which can translate to poor patient outcomes. Health care is delivered in a team-based format, necessitating that health professions students receive quality, team-based training. This lightning talk will focus on the implementation and outcomes of an interprofessional simulation, IPE Peak Performance, aimed at improving collaborative practice and leadership skills among nursing and medical students.
Preparing students for collaborative practice in the classroom and beyond is addressed in this lightning talk, as its focus is to show the outcomes of an interprofessional simulation aimed at improving leadership skills including confidence in collaboration and roles and responsibilities, self-awareness, communication, collaboration, openness, managing conflict and managing others among nursing and medical students. Student participation in IPE Peak Performance simulation led to statistically significant increases in self-reported confidence in interprofessional collaboration, understanding roles/responsibilities, and leadership skill development. At baseline medical students reported greater skill confidence compared to nursing students. Post-simulation, nursing students reported greater gains in managing conflict and managing others. Participant feedback that will inform IPE Peak Performance future session improvement primarily focused on session length, incorporate additional professions, and use of technology to optimize engagement. The IPE Peak Performance simulation was designed to improve student skills in interprofessional collaboration and leadership. Student feedback from an initial pilot session and the first full session will be used to improve the experience to further promote the development of critical skills for optimal interprofessional collaboration. Offering students opportunities to practice and develop these skills will help improve patient experience and health care professionals' wellness.
