patient and family engagement

Seminar Description: Abstract

Background:
Engagement with patients, families and other community members in the design and delivery of interprofessional education is increasingly seen as beneficial, but there are many questions about how to do this in a good way. As part of a recent research project, we co-created with patients and the public a set of evidence-informed guiding principles, models and processes for the authentic, ongoing and sustainable engagement of patients and the public in health professional education. We identified from the literature a set of guiding principles of relevance to health professional education. We conducted focus groups with patients and community members representing a wide variety of perspectives. Participants reviewed, prioritized and discussed the principles, and described what successful engagement looks like. Analysis of data from the focus groups resulted in a set of eight guiding principles. The principles were reviewed and endorsed by senior leaders in our institution.

Patients and the public want involvement with heath professional education to be based on principles of Accountability, Inclusion, Reciprocity, Partnership / shared decision-making, Co-production, Two-way communication, Supports, and Different levels of engagement. They want to see evidence that their contributions are valued and have made a difference. They want the institution to include and support a diversity of perspectives that reflect the populations being served by the healthcare system. They want the institution to invest in building trusting and respectful long-term relationships with patients and the public.

In this seminar we will present the eight guiding principles and engage the audience in applying these principles to an interprofessional education context at their own institution. The seminar will be presented by members of the research team, including two patient partners.
