Exploring the Future of AI Within Health Professions Education

Wednesday, September 27, 2023, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm CDT
Some experience with IPE
artificial intelligence

Seminar Description: At a recent workshop run by the National Academies’ Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education (HPE), educators and practitioners with varying levels of understanding of artificial intelligence (AI), gathered to listen to and learn from those with experience in applying AI in HPE. Discussions were based on a framework proposed by Lomis et al. (2021) that emphasized collective action of educators across professions to implement and optimize the use of AI while mitigating unintended consequences. This discussion, and the wisdom drawn from the audience’s questions and comments, laid a foundation for next steps in following a roadmap for leveraging AI in classrooms and clinics. A proposed 60-minute skill-building seminar would introduce knowledge and skills that are immediately actionable for educating health professionals and their learners on critical issues to consider in relation to AI.

Topics to be explored in this seminar would include:
• AI involvement and transparency in diagnosis and treatment planning
• Addressing public mistrust of AI through community education
• Integration of AI into healthcare education and competencies
• Ensuring global participation and equity in AI integration
• AI applications in clinical education, mental health, and disaster response and potential disruptions to medical specialties

The proposed seminar structure would involve a lively, moderated roundtable discussion with input from the virtual audience through a chat or Q&A function. Roundtable discussants would include representatives from multiple health professions as well as a learner to encourage interprofessional discussions from multiple perspectives.
