Consistent Positive Effect of a Novel Interprofessional Palliative Care Program on Learners' Self-efficacy for End-of-life Care Skills

Lightning Talk Description: The need for primary palliative care education has been recognized across multiple disciplines, but many existing educational efforts have been siloed within individual disciplines. In this lightning talk, we will discuss the development and outcomes of the Jefferson Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education’s Interprofessional Palliative Care program from its pilot in 2020 to its most recent implementation in Spring of 2023. Aligned with the National Consensus Project’s Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, the program is a semester-long hybrid curriculum that includes asynchronous didactic modules, synchronous case-based learning, participation in interdisciplinary team rounds, shadowing palliative care providers, and student-team developed presentations.

Pre- and post-program surveys were administered via Qualtrics each year of the Interprofessional Palliative Care program. Surveys included demographic questions, the End-of-Life Professional Caregiver Survey (EPCS), and open-ended program evaluation questions. The EPCS is a 28-item instrument for self-assessing palliative and end-of-life care-specific educational needs of multidisciplinary professionals. It contains 3 sub-scales: patient and family-centered communication (PFCC), cultural and ethical values (CEV), and effective care delivery (ECD). Items are rated on a 5-point Likert (0 “not at all” to 4 “very much”). Twenty-three students from 8 professions participated in the Pilot study; 23 students from 8 professions participated in the 2022 study; and 28 students from 11 professions participated in the 2023 study. Each year, there was a large positive effect (Cohen’s d > .9) of the Interprofessional Palliative Care program on mean EPCS and sub-scale scores.

In support of improving patient care, this activity is planned and implemented by The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Office of Interprofessional Continuing Professional Development (National Center OICPD). The National Center OICPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

As a Jointly Accredited Provider, the National Center is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The National Center maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive continuing education credits.

The National Center OICPD (JA#: 4008105) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers (ATs).
