Helena Heister is a second-year medical student at the Fort Collins branch at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2019 with a bachelor’s in Integrative Physiology. There, she also studied Landscape Architecture and Public Health and did research on how people make decisions to navigate the built environment, and how we can manipulate the built environment to encourage people to walk. She has continued pursuing these intersectional interests in medical school by taking a One Health elective, and by volunteering at the Murphy Center and Street Dog Coalition.

Lightning Talk Description: There are over 580,000 individuals who were unhoused in 2022 and an estimated 10% of people who are unhoused have pets. These pets can provide safety and mental health benefits for their human companions, but they can also limit their owners’ access to transportation, shelters, housing, and medical facilities. The Street Dog Coalition is a team of veterinary and medical professionals and students who provide free medical care and related services to pets of people who are, or are at risk of becoming, unhoused.
