Dana Karkoutli is a fourth-year dental student at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry. With a focus on interprofessional collaboration, Dana participated in educational and field experiences to broaden her knowledge of teamwork. Through the Interprofessional Scholars Program at LSUHSC, Dana created a customized learning plan with the goal of using her new knowledge to promote incorporating dentistry into interprofessional leadership teams. Maintaining a balance between her dental school curriculum, clinicals, and the various interprofessional traineeships she engaged in, Dana was able to form a new perspective on interprofessional collaborative practice and tackling challenges related to it.

Seminar Description: With rapid changing healthcare and the increase in need of collaborative practice, education needs to adapt to meet these new changes. While Self Directed learning is not a new model or concept, it has been shown to be very effective form of education. “Cultivating students’ self-direction in learning is an imperative result of education.” ( Du Toit-Brits 2015).
