Lightning Talk Description: This project aimed to improve patient-perceived diabetes management self-efficacy by utilizing a team of bilingual interprofessional students to deliver culturally tailored diabetes self-management education (DSME) to patients of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center’s (OUHSC) student-run free clinic, the Unity Clinic.
Diabetes is a leading cause of death, disability, hospital visits, and medical expense in the United States. Diabetes self-management education (DSME) improves health outcomes in patients with diabetes. Unfortunately, those without health insurance and with low income cannot access traditional DSME. Language is yet another barrier for many who do not speak English. DSME delivered by a team of bilingual interprofessional health students allowed Unity Clinic to implement DSME while remaining budget-neutral, removed barriers to DSME access for patients, and provided the students with an innovative and non-traditional learning environment.
This project addresses health equity and social determinants of health in the Spanish-speaking and low-income population. This presentation will discuss how we improved diabetes management self-efficacy, removed barriers to access, and provided the students with a unique interprofessional learning opportunity. This project targeted an underserved community in Oklahoma.
Evaluation measures included patient feedback in an effort to continue to improve DSME offerings. Health outcomes measured patient-perceived diabetes self-efficacy, hemoglobin A1c, and body mass index pre and post DSME. Learner interprofessional skills were measured via the Jefferson Teamwork Observation Guide. Project outcomes demonstrate this curriculum enhances the patient experience, has potential to improve population health, and is valuable to patients and students. This project is sustainable and replicable, and can be duplicated in other languages for different community needs.
