The Revised 2023 IPEC Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice
Seminar Description: In 2021, the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) began a formal process to review and revise the 2016 IPEC Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice. First released in 2011, the IPEC Core Competencies have helped to frame the national dialogue on the need for interprofessional education and collaborative practic as a catalyst for improving team-based patient care and enhancing population health outcomes.
The IPEC Core Competencies: 2023 Preliminary Draft Revisions contain 33 competency statements that apply across the health professions for those engaged in interprofessional education for collaborative practice. Building upon the value and impact of IPEC’s 2011 original and 2016 updated work, the 2023 changes refined the competencies to include contributions from new and existing IPEC constituents and additional professions. The revision also integrated concepts from the Triple Aim with new content from the Quadruple and Quintuple Aims, and concepts from One Health, as well as new evidence and constructs from academic, practice, socio-cultural, environmental, workforce, and/or systems changes.
After attending the session, the learner will be able to:
- Describe IPEC's rationale, approach, and process of revising the IPEC Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice
- Discuss the foundational elements and concepts outlined in the revised IPEC Core Competencies
- Compare similarities and differences across the 2016 and 2023 competency sets
- Articulate the added value of the 2023 framework revisions
Interactive features include polling, discussion prompts, and whiteboard activities.
The seminar is directly linked to the conference's criteria as it is tied to competency-based education and interprofessional curriculum development.
