Seminar Description: Escape rooms have become a popular activity in recent years, and, not surprisingly, educators have looked to leverage these activities as a way to engage active learning in curriculum. These escape rooms, often known as breakout boxes, are a series of puzzles or clues that must be solved, often by teams, to unlock a box or a room. An advanced practice provider (APP) transition-to-practice program for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs), known as an APP fellowship, implemented this innovative curriculum into a variety of programs, with both clinical and professional curriculum, with measurable success in satisfaction and learning outcomes. Understanding how to frame the activity to meet the needs of the learners and the learning objectives is critical to designing this fun and innovative activity. The presenters will share several applications of the activity, including the implementation in single fellowship specialty, events with multiple APP fellows from several different specialties (including inpatient and outpatient), those with medical and APP fellows together, and the implementation in a preceptor training program.

To illustrate the development and implementation of an in-person escape room, the presenters will take attendees through a virtual escape room to demonstrate how the same concept can be used with a digital modality to engage learners, a concept that can be used with both in seat and virtual learning. The attendees of this presentation will work to solve a series of clues, each of which will unlock the presentation’s learning objectives: identifying the appropriate curriculum to develop an escape room, matching series of puzzle types to a corresponding escape room activity, reviewing tips to a successful activity, and, lastly, solving the final escape room clue.

Demonstration of the impact of these innovative learning activities will be shared through the evaluation data, which demonstrates Kirkpatrick’s Level 1 (reaction) outcomes on five distinct indicators and Level 2 (learning) outcomes on reported increase in competency.
